Statement of Purpose: In the 1930s Dalton Trumbo wrote a book about a young man who goes off to fight in WWI and is severely wounded in battle. To save his life doctors must amputate his arms, legs and scrape off his face between his neck and brow. His hearing is also detroyed. Over the years, he realizes his situation, but he develops a way to communicate by beating out morse code with head and neck. His astonished doctors ask him what he wants to say. Barely able to contain himself, the soldier tells them that he wants to travel the country and put himself on display for all to look at. This way people will see the reality of war. The soldier is that told this is impossible and is immediately sedated.
